The IndiaAI Mission is surging forward with significant interest from tech leaders. Round-2 of the GPU tender sees bids for 18,000 GPUs, signaling a major leap in India's AI capabilities and local language model development.
India's ambitious AI mission is gaining remarkable traction, highlighted by the enthusiastic response to the second round of the IndiaAI GPU tender. The Centre has received bids offering a substantial 18,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), with an expected 15,000 GPUs to qualify after rigorous technical evaluations and commercial bid openings. This surge in GPU availability is poised to significantly boost India's AI capabilities and fuel the development of local language models under the government's Rs 10,000-crore mission.
IndiaAI CEO Abhishek Singh expressed optimism about the mission's progress, stating that the overwhelming interest from leading technology firms underscores the potential of India's AI ecosystem. The shortlisted companies for technical evaluation include partners of major players like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Oracle, and Google Cloud, indicating a strong commitment from global tech giants to contribute to India's AI advancement.
The first round of the GPU tender has already concluded successfully, with New Delhi offering 15,000 GPUs at subsidized rates to startups, academics, and research organizations. This initiative is designed to democratize access to AI resources, empowering innovators across the country.
Furthermore, the IndiaAI Mission has attracted over 230 applications for building India-specific large language models (LLMs) and small language models (SLMs), with more than 30,000 GPU requests in the pipeline. In response to this high demand, the bid submission for the third continuous empanelment is now open, signaling a continuous effort to expand India's AI infrastructure.
Looking ahead, companies are planning to bid higher versions of GPUs in the upcoming third round, showcasing the commitment to leverage cutting-edge technology. As Piyush Somani, founding chief executive of ESDS Software Solution, shared, "We are in the process of acquiring the Nvidia Blackwell series of GPUs -- B200 and B300. Once those are deployed in our data centers, we will be submitting the bid for the third round of the IndiaAI Mission's GPU tender which is now open." This dedication to deploying advanced GPU technology ensures that India's AI capabilities remain at the forefront of innovation.
The IndiaAI Mission represents a significant step towards establishing India as a global AI powerhouse. By incentivizing the development of local language models and providing access to advanced computing resources, the government is creating a vibrant ecosystem that fosters innovation and drives economic growth.
