Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the energy sector, leading to increased efficiency, reduced emissions, and the creation of new job opportunities. Industry experts highlight AI's pivotal role in optimizing energy grids, predicting renewable energy output, and fostering a sustainable future.
The energy sector is experiencing a significant positive shift thanks to the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This technological revolution promises a more intelligent, resilient, and sustainable future by optimizing energy generation, distribution, and consumption. Experts are optimistic about AI's potential to not only enhance the efficiency of complex grids but also accurately predict renewable energy output, promote energy equity, and reduce environmental impact.
Hisham Mundol, Chief Advisor at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) India, emphasizes AI's expansive role, stating that it extends far beyond renewable energy integration. He believes AI can transform grids into 'smart grids' capable of balancing loads, reducing energy losses, and optimizing energy flow. Furthermore, advanced computing capabilities are being utilized to detect methane emissions, aiding the oil and gas sector in minimizing their environmental footprint. "These are still early days for AI at EDF, and we are excited to explore further climate-tech integrations," Mundol stated, highlighting the ongoing commitment to innovation.
Companies are already reaping tangible benefits from deploying AI solutions. Veena Khandke, Senior VP and MD of Ensono India, detailed her company's success in adopting AI for sustainability. "We are pioneering AI-driven solutions that embed energy efficiency and sustainability into every facet of our operations," Khandke reported. Through AI-driven smart resource allocation and predictive maintenance, Ensono has witnessed a remarkable reduction in energy consumption at its data centers. Specifically, electricity consumption has decreased by nearly 16%, and carbon emissions have dropped by 17% between 2023 and 2024. Ensono is also leveraging AI-powered analytics to assist clients in streamlining processes, minimizing energy waste, and aligning with global standards like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
While AI-powered automation may alter some routine manual roles, Divyesh Savaliya, Chairman of Onix Renewable Ltd., highlights the significant value AI brings to hybrid renewable energy projects. According to Savaliya, AI minimizes human efforts in managing excess energy injected into the grid, ensuring greater stability. Additionally, its importance in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for balancing energy generation and consumption during peak and off-peak hours underscores the necessity for future professionals in the energy sector to adapt to new roles and technological shifts. The rise of AI is not just transforming the energy landscape; it's creating exciting new opportunities and ensuring a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
